Audition Information
Teachers planning to enter students in the 2008 auditions should study the TMTA Auditions Syllabus and the 1996 Musicianship Manual to select repertoire, choose correct theory phases, and read general guidelines. New teachers can order a syllabus ($3) and a Musicianship Manual ($20) from Carole Boeing, 6638 Holt Rd., Nashville, TN 37206 (615-333-9222). Your check should be made payable to TMTA. We recommend that new members find a "veteran" of this process to guide them through the audition procedure. Contact Anne May if you need help finding a mentor for this process!
If your student cannot attend the Theory Exams on Saturday, March 8th, 2008, he or she may take the theory test at an alternate time from another KMTA member. Please note on the top right hand corner of your student’s application that the he/she will need early testing. The tests must be administered and results mailed, e-mailed or relayed by phone to the theory chairman (Anne May) prior to the March 8th testing date. Please do not sign your students up for early testing unless they are truly unable to attend on Saturday, March 8th. This creates a lot of extra work because it takes much more time to administer tests individually.
Teachers should send their applications to Anne May postmarked no later than Saturday, February 9th, 2008. The theory committee will be meeting to do final scheduling on Wednesday the 13th, and no applications will be accepted after that date. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS!!! The application is found in the back of the TMTA syllabus. Cost is $20.00 for students Grade 3 and above and $15 for Grades K-2. Students may register for only the theory section for a fee of $5. Please include one check for all fees made out to KMTA. All fees are non-refundable. Teachers will receive a letter with scheduling for theory exams approximately one week before testing. If you would like to receive notification by email instead of “snail mail”, please include your email address at the top of your application. Ms. Hsueh would like to receive a copy of the application and judge's sheets for each student participating in the Performance Auditions by Saturday, March 29th, 2008. They should be postmarked by Wednesday, March 26th, 2008. (Plan ahead – I believe that this may be the week of Spring Break for many students.) If a student has special scheduling requests for performance auditions, please mark these on the application forms. These requests will be honored if at all possible. Due to the number of students involved, schedule changes after the schedule is finalized will be made only in extreme emergencies.
Each teacher who enters students is required to work a minimum of two shifts, morning and/or afternoon of his/her choice at either the theory or performance auditions or one shift at each. If you enter more than 8 students you will be expected to work 3 shifts. We simply cannot accommodate all students without your help. Please fill out the Teacher Information Sheet included with this mailing and send it in with your theory applications. Applications will not be processed without a complete Teacher Info Sheet. Teachers who are unable to work at either the theory or the performance auditions may volunteer to serve as an administrator for those students needing an earlier date for theory testing.
Performance audition sheets will be given to teachers at the end of each audition day. Critiques not picked by the end of Sunday auditions will be mailed to the teacher the following week.
